The Problem Nobody Wants to Think About

Writing a will is one of those tasks that almost everyone knows they should do, and almost nobody actually gets around to doing. It sits on the perpetual to-do list alongside cleaning the gutters and organising the garage, except the consequences of ignoring it are far more serious.

The numbers are stark. According to recent research, 60% of UK adults do not have a valid will. That is roughly 31 million people whose families could face months of legal complications, unexpected tax burdens, and bitter disputes over assets if the worst were to happen. For families with children, the stakes are even higher. Without a will, there is no guarantee that your chosen guardian will be appointed.

So why do so many people put it off? The barriers are real:

  • Cost. A solicitor-drafted will typically costs between £200 and £500 for a single person, and significantly more for couples or complex estates.
  • Time. Booking an appointment, gathering documents, attending consultations, and waiting for drafts can stretch the process over several weeks.
  • Intimidation. Legal language is daunting. Many people feel overwhelmed before they even start, unsure of what they need to decide or how to express their wishes.

Existing online will-writing tools have attempted to solve this, but most fall short. They tend to be little more than digital forms: rigid questionnaires that still require significant manual effort and leave users feeling uncertain about whether they have covered everything correctly.

"We looked at the market and saw a clear gap. The technology existed to do this properly, to make will-writing genuinely accessible, but nobody had put it all together yet."

Introducing Willbert

Willbert is the world's first AI will-writing system that works both on the web and over the phone. It is not a form. It is not a chatbot bolted onto a template. It is a purpose-built AI platform that understands the legal requirements of will-writing and guides users through the process conversationally, adapting to their specific circumstances in real time.

How It Works Online

On the web, users interact with Willbert through a modern conversational interface. Rather than filling in boxes on a form, they have a guided conversation. Willbert asks questions in plain English, explains why each question matters, and intelligently follows up based on the answers given. If a user mentions they have children from a previous relationship, Willbert knows to ask about guardianship arrangements and how assets should be divided. If someone owns a business, it understands the implications for inheritance and tax planning.

How It Works by Phone

This is where Willbert truly breaks new ground. Users can simply call in and speak to Willbert, an AI voice agent that conducts the entire will-writing process as a natural telephone conversation. The voice system uses the same AI technology that powers our Telephone Integrations service, connected directly to the will-writing engine.

For older people who are not comfortable using websites or apps, the phone option is transformative. They can pick up the phone, have a conversation, and end up with a properly structured will, all without needing to touch a computer.

What Willbert Produces

At the end of the process, which typically takes under 15 minutes, Willbert generates a fully structured will document that follows correct legal formatting and language. The user can review it on screen or have it posted to them, then simply print, sign, and have it witnessed to make it legally valid.

How We Built It

Dynamics Agency designed and engineered Willbert from the ground up. This was not a case of wrapping an existing AI model in a new interface. We built a specialised system that combines conversational AI with deep legal knowledge.

The web platform uses a modern conversational UI that feels more like messaging a knowledgeable friend than filling in a government form. Every interaction is designed to reduce friction and build confidence. Progress is saved automatically, so users can pause and come back whenever they like.

The telephone system required a different engineering challenge entirely. We needed our AI voice agent to handle natural speech patterns (hesitations, corrections, tangents) while maintaining an accurate record of the user's wishes. The voice agent confirms key decisions back to the caller and can repeat or rephrase anything that is unclear.

Crucially, we worked closely with legal professionals throughout development. Every question path, every generated clause, and every edge case was reviewed and validated by practising solicitors who specialise in wills and probate. The system handles complex scenarios that trip up most online tools:

  • Blended families with children from multiple relationships
  • Business assets and partnership interests
  • Property held as joint tenants or tenants in common
  • Trusts for minor beneficiaries
  • Charitable bequests and conditional gifts
  • Appointment of multiple executors with specific roles

Why It Matters

Willbert is not just a faster way to write a will. It represents a fundamental shift in who can access this essential legal service.

Cost is no longer a barrier. At a fraction of the price of a solicitor consultation, Willbert makes will-writing affordable for everyone. For many families, this could be the difference between having protection in place and having nothing at all.

Technology is no longer a barrier. The phone option means that the millions of people who are not confident online, particularly older adults who arguably need a will most urgently, can access the service just as easily as anyone else. All they need is a telephone.

Complexity is no longer a barrier. Willbert does not just handle simple wills. It understands nuance, asks the right follow-up questions, and produces documents that account for genuinely complex family and financial situations.

"The phone experience is remarkable. My mother is 78 and has been putting off writing a will for years because she finds websites confusing. She called Willbert, had a 12-minute conversation, and had her will ready the next morning. It was extraordinary."

What's Next for Willbert

Willbert is launching initially as a white-label platform that law firms and financial advisors can offer directly to their clients. This gives professional firms a powerful tool to serve clients who might otherwise go without a will, while maintaining their own branding and client relationships.

A direct-to-consumer version is planned for later in 2026, which will make Willbert available to anyone in the UK who wants to create a will quickly and affordably.

Looking further ahead, we are exploring integration with related services, including estate planning, lasting powers of attorney, and advance decision documents. The same conversational AI approach that makes will-writing accessible can be applied to these equally important but equally neglected areas of legal planning.

If you are a law firm, financial advisory, or organisation that wants to offer AI-powered will-writing to your clients, we would love to hear from you. Get in touch to find out more about Willbert and what it could do for your business.
